Cinema Politica Sackville

In Mi’kmaq Resistance: Defend the Sacred, Mi’kmaw grandmothers and water protectors defend the Shubenacadie River in so-called Nova Scotia from Alton Gas, which aimed to build salt caverns for natural gas storage. After eight years of opposing the project, the company in charge decommissioned it. Water Warriors is the story of a community’s successful fight to protect their water from the oil and natural gas industry. In 2013, Texas-based SWN Resources arrived in so-called New Brunswick to explore for natural gas. In response, members of Elsipogtog First Nation, French-speaking Acadians and white, English-speaking families set up a series of road blockades, preventing exploration. Street Politics 101 features some of the best footage from what some called “the maple spring.” In the spring of 2012, a massive student strike in opposition to a tuition hike rocked the streets of Montréal for over six months. The film features interviews with students, teachers and anarchists involved in one of the most militant rebellions in Quebec. This screening is co-presented with Divest MtA and the Mount Allison Feminism and Gender Studies Student Society. The screening will be followed by a discussion. All welcome.
